Love, Gilda

Love, Gilda is pretty much what one would expect from a modern day documentary about Gilda Radner.

The feature-length debut of Lisa Dapolito utilizes the usual combination of archival footage, photos and talking head interviews with the late comedienne’s family and close friends, crafting an informative and engaging profile in the process.

Elevating this tried-and-true approach is the recruitment of SNL alums (Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Cecily Strong) and notable hosts (Melissa McCarthy) significantly influenced by Radner to read from her hand-written diaries, a choice that yields frequent awe and delights from these honored participants.

While the film — like many of its contemporaries — could do with additional inspired decisions in this vein, it nonetheless accomplishes its goals and pays thorough homage to one of the all-time greats who made a sizable impact before departing this world all too soon.
