Six years after unleashing narrative mediocrity and “Let It Go” on the world, the makers of Frozen return for another round with characters who are likable, but written in such a way that it’s difficult to care about their fates.

A waste of beautiful animation, Frozen II spins a convoluted tale involving the origins of ice queen Elsa’s chilly powers, sending her, sister Anna, and the rest of their dull bozo pals on an imagery-rich quest, belting out (blessedly) instantly forgettable songs to work out their feelings.

Gorgeous water horses are ridden and the first installment is hilariously reenacted by comic-relief snowman Olaf — still the series’ standout creation, though his charms are fading — but without a traditional villain or compelling conflict, the film struggles to sustain audience investment.

The visuals and peril are likely enough to keep children entertained, but for viewers craving more from an animated feature, Frozen II fails to deliver more than fleeting amusement.
