Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry
Impressive in its access, Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry suggests that director R.J. Cutler was on the periphery of every important moment in the life of the multiple Grammy winning artist for multiple years.
The level of honesty on display by the teenage pop star, her equally talented (if not more so) brother Finneas, and their loving, supportive parents in turn makes the documentary feel less managed by outside forces than the likes of Taylor Swift’s Miss Americana, and more of an honest portrait of a young woman processing the challenges and rewards of being in the global spotlight.
While the film could stand to be somewhat shorter — 140 minutes is a bit much for an artist with one album — and the recording process receives significantly more attention than the sibling’s songwriting process, the related revelations Eilish freely offers regarding creativity, relationships, and her mental wellbeing more than carry the film and make her first major documentary somewhat of a must-see event.
